3 Essential Skills of a Successful Learning Consultant

I’ve had the pleasure of working with many amazing Learning Consultants throughout my career. What I’ve appreciated about each person I’ve worked with has been their unique perspective, and our collective efforts to improve our practice.

While there are many skills and qualities of a phenomenal Learning Consultant, there are three skills which differentiate the good from the great, and every Learning Consultant (or Consultant in general) should continually work on.

  1. They are curious about their customer and their business. To create a successful learning journey, understanding the customer’s need, business process, and challenges is essential. Exceptional Learning Consultants are learners themselves, and learn just as much about their customer as the customer learns from them.

  2. They listen. During the Analysis and Design phases, they listen to their customer, when they train they continue to listen to learners. This helps them understand the macrolevel of desired outcomes, and the microlevel for each individual.

  3. They deliver the solution the customer needs, not the one they ask for. This sounds easier than it is; in involves digging into requirements and educating the customer on the available learning solutions so they can make an informed decision.
